Banana

@michael_galligan dives into the world of bananas with his solo #clown show, #Banana🍌 With all the audaciousness of a Quentin Tarantino flick and the unexpected tonal shifts of a Charlie Kaufman script, Galligan challenges us to question... well, everything. 🤔

Starting off as the alluringly French 🇫🇷 “Gros Michele”, complete with a banana hammock (pun intended) and transitioning to a more reserved Cavendish in a box, Galligan plays with personification, sensuality, and self-awareness. While the wardrobe changes & characterisations bring ample laughter, the direction at times is like catching a slippery banana peel— a touch off balance and keeping you guessing🤔…

Much like Beckett's tramps in Waiting for Godot, we’re presented with characters wrestling with identity & existence. “Gros Michele” isn’t just a banana; he's the fading echo of a variety once revered, embodying the cultural loss & capricious nature of popularity. In contrast, the Cavendish, confined to a box📦, becomes a stark emblem of the constraints we self-impose. It's a nod to society's incessant push for standardisation and the suffocation of individuality…

Audience interaction is in full swing, peppered with a consensual touch of naughtiness. And yes, it can get pretty R-rated at times🫣 (#GoWithYourGran). The transitions might be clunky, reminiscent of jump cuts in avant-garde cinema, but that's also where the charm lies. The show boldly questions its own existence, daring to be self-aware while keeping its intentions enigmatic… 🎭

Indeed, we're never quite sure of the overall message or meaning, but the journey is undeniably engrossing. You'll leave the theatre pondering the purpose of this fruit-filled escapade, and maybe, just maybe, that’s precisely the point.
Do we recommend? For those craving bold theatre with a side of "huh?", absolutely. 3/5 🌟🌟🌟
